Now that most of you have had a week or so to get back into the school groove, it's time to put your chess hats on!
Over the summer, the awards committee has been contemplating the best way to reward players at our 2008 State Championship...
scheduled for February 22-23 in Roseburg. (Thanks to Randy for offering to host!) We'll unveil our plans in the
next month or so. If you would like to have input on awards, now is the time to share your ideas. We have a LOT
more awards this year with the new configuration.
Just before summer break, we voted to add the position of Secretary to our board of directors. The position is
actually more of a historian and will maintain the records for our organization. This involves keeping the secret
"box" (the contents of which have been seen by only the most daring of our membership), taking minutes at our annual
meeting and tabulating the results of online voting. My estimate is that this is a job that will take, on average, about
10 minutes/month. If you're wondering what exactly is in the box and have 10 minutes/month to spare, please give us
hand! It's a painless way to help out this terrific organization. We need you!
League directors will soon be contacting member schools and setting their schedule for the year. Please get this
information to me as soon as possible so I can post it on the website. For those of you without a league in your
area, you can hold an invitational tournament for schools in your OSAA classification. That would be
a very fun way to encourage new club development and scope out the competition!
We have some changes in our mix this year. Steve Hawke, just before he retired, anointed er umm
I mean appointed Stephen Runion as his successor. Mike Whetter is taking over as the guiding force at Wilson.
Both, excellent choices! And... Jesuit is back! Joseph Trasciatti is their new coach.
I'm sure there will be other changes and new additions throughout the year. If you have news about your school,
please post it here.
That's all for now.
Best Wishes for another Great Year of Chess!
